If there’s one thing I like in this world it’s Christmas. While some people dread the lights, music and decorations, as soon as Thanksgiving dinner is in the bag I’m putting up the tree while my 130 song Christmas playlist plays. I love everything about Christmas; lights, movies, snow, gift giving… but the music might be my favorite thing. Which is what some people hate the most. It can be understandable, there are songs I hate too, and some of the old songs we’ve heard a million times over the decades can get pretty tired. So we here at The Spew decided to do the ’25 Day Christmas Song Challenge’ to shed some light on the good Christmas music. New songs or versions of old ones you may not have heard before. Or maybe even some classics that never get old. So put on your long johns and grab some cocoa, it’s going to be a long December!
Day 1: A Song That Gets You In the Christmas Spirit
Josh: Christmas All Over Again – Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
America transformed Christmas into what it is today. While it’s roots are from many different nations and traditions, some of the things most associated with Christmas worldwide were created right here in the good ol’ US of A. And what could be more American than Tom Petty? Some of you may recognize this song from Christmas movies like Home Alone 2, Jingle All the Way, or Four Christmases, but I became familiar with it while working the dregs of retail. And this rockin’ tune helped me get through many a dreary Christmas season. A nice rockin’ beat, a truly merry feeling and nods to many things Christmas; decorations, bells, relatives, mistletoe, fire… This song proves that, as Tom says himself, ‘Christmas is a rockin’ time!’
Joey’s Pick: Come On, Christmas – Matthew West
I like original Christmas songs as much as new versions of classics, and Matthew West’s Heart of Christmas album is chock full of both. Come On, Christmas is a desperate plea for Christmas to hurry and arrive, and its a great way to kick off the “official” holiday season. And the line “I’ve been singing Jingle Bell Rock since July,” is totally me.
Dustin’s Pick: Wizards in Winter – Trans Siberian Orchestra
The only good Christmas song is Wizards in Winter by TSO.
Tumps’ pick – Christmas Time is Here
Who didn’t watch A Charlie Brown Christmas growing up. In my house it was a Christmas staple… still is.
